In the wake of government intervention, IndiGo plans to start compensating the passengers affected by its massive flight cancellations this month. Those who were at airports during the December 3, 4, and 5 disruptions and were severely affected will get travel vouchers of ₹10,000 each from December 26, 2025, onwards. More compensation depending on the government norms will also be given, which would range from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000.

Aviation Secretary Samir Sinha directed that compensation payments for passengers who booked directly via IndiGo’s website should begin immediately, as their details are already with the airline. IndiGo has also been instructed to collect booking information from travel agents and online travel agencies (OTAs) to ensure all affected passengers receive compensation. The DGCA will oversee the process via the Air Seva portal.

While IndiGo has initiated refunds for direct bookings, many passengers who booked through OTAs are still awaiting reimbursements. For example, a passenger from South Delhi, Asha Sen, who partially paid for her flight using credit card points on December 7, has yet to receive a complete refund because the OTA has not processed it fully.

IndiGo confirmed that refunds for affected days have been given in full and it is now up to OTAs to transfer the amounts to passengers. Leading OTAs like MakeMyTrip have already processed significant refunds, totaling almost ₹10 crore, even before receiving funds from IndiGo.

Between the 1st and 9th of December 2025, the Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo had to cancel a total of 4,354 flights which included 2,507 flights just between the 3rd and 5th of that month (2,456 were domestic flights and the rest 51 were international). If we take the average of 150 passengers per flight, more than 3.8 lakh passengers could claim the compensation vouchers which will be worth around ₹376 crore in total.

To this end, the company wants to eliminate the backlog rapidly and to satisfy the regulations by giving the compensation to all the passengers who were impacted.
